Last week, seven members from LU Leipzig’s Computer Science Society traveled to Bailrigg, England, to collaborate with their counterparts from the main campus: CompSoc. This visit was part of an international collaborative initiative that aims to strengthen ties between different Lancaster University campuses around the globe. Together, we worked on an ambitious project, an automatic waste sorting system, which continues the work started during a previous event in Leipzig: https://lnkd.in/eVNTTgGR

The event in Leipzig allowed both teams to bond while developing a prototype of a 3D-printed robotic arm in just three days! This time, though, we scaled things up. 💪 Instead of a single 3D-printed arm, we introduced two KUKA industrial robots, the same ones used in car assembly lines. These powerhouses, capable of handling loads of 180kg and moving at 3m/s, were crucial in elevating our solution to an industrial scale.

By dividing into sub-teams, we tackled the challenge with a combination of machine learning for object detection and classification, alongside robotics for precise sorting. We’re proud to say that this collaboration resulted in a promising proof-of-concept.

💡 By innovating in waste management, we hope to contribute toward sustainable solutions for one of the world’s growing environmental concerns. Our long-term vision is to extend this technology to more critical areas, such as nuclear waste management, where safe and efficient handling is of utter importance.

A huge thank you to all our collaborators and supporters! Special thanks go to:

LCSS’s team: Matias Barandiaran Rivera, Parichay Sachdev, Mustafa Azizi, Mikelis Kamepe, Osvaldo Catine Jr, Athar Syed and Inderjot Singh Litt.

CompSoc’s team: André Mariucci, Isaac R., Henry Oldroyd, Toby Vernon and Max.

Together, we’re working toward a greener, more sustainable future, one innovative solution at a time. 🌱♻️
